China promotes potato cultivation

China wants to promote the cultivation of potatoes as one of their staple foods, as well as rice, wheat and maize. This was announced by the Deputy Agriculture Minister Yu Xinrong on Tuesday during a seminar.

Wan Baouri, Director of the Advisory Committee of Food and Nutrition in China, is sure, that considering the rapid urbanization in China, it is the right time to promote potatoes as a greater food variety in China.

Potatoes have a 400-year history of cultivation in China. The Department of Agriculture states that they are covering a five million hectares acreage. To cover the grain supply, China wants to expand their acreage to 10 million hectares.
