According to Pachamama, the Agricultural Weekly Paper of the Embassy of Peru in United States, in 2014, Peru became the third biggest supplier of Hass avocados to the United States and the second largest exporter of this product to that market.
This weekly paper collects data recorded on the website of the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) of the United States. According to that data, Mexico is the first provider of that market with 603,670,001 kilos of avocado.
California, which supplied its own market, ranks second with 128,139,424 kilos, followed by Peru, which dispatched 65,361,887 kilos of avocados to the United States, and Chile, with 40,495,133 kilos.
Other providers of Hass avocados to the United States, although to a lesser extent, were New Zealand and the Dominican Republic, with 2,993,710 and 1,220,163 kilos respectively.
In this regard, Arturo Medina Castro, the general manager of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (Prohass), said that this is the first time that Peru ranked second as the leading exporter of Hass avocados to the United States, displacing Chile which currently allocates 55% of its production to the domestic market.
"2014 was an important campaign, we dispatched very high volumes. Proof of this is that the Peruvian Hass avocado exports grew 57%, reaching 167,000 tons, when compared to 2013, "he said.
He also said that it was still too early to say how much they would export to the US this year, but that he was confident that there would be an increase in exports.
