Italy: Apple market affected by oversupply and Russian ban

"The apple market is not going so well, especially for produce from the plain. Fruit from Trentino and Alto Adige is doing a little better," explains Roberto Piazza, director of Fedagromercati-Acmo Bologna.

"This is the result of an abundant production and most of all, because of the Russian ban. The problem is not so much caused by the fact that we cannot access the Russian market, but by the huge quantities of Polish apples that are flooding the European market."

"The quality of Polish apples is medium to medium-low so they are sold at such low prices and that affects all the rest - just think, 1kg packets are sold at 30 cents in Germany and the Netherlands!"

"In addition, the recent warm temperatures has hinderd demand. Prices are on average 20-30% lower than last year."
