Fenland Celery made its début at P&I Side Salads

Fenland Celery made its début at P&I Side Salads in New Covent Garden wholesale market this morning. The season will run from October to November.

This traditional celery is grown in the rich peaty soils of the Fens and is the first English vegetable to earn Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.

Simon Collier-Ward from P&I Side Salads said this winter celery has a unique nutty/sweet taste and is less stringy than other varieties. It is aimed to catch the attentions of London's chefs and caterers who are looking for something a little bit different. It is exclusively available from their stand in the market.

In Victorian times, celery was specially grown in the Fens for the Christmas market and was extremely popular. This traditional celery is grown by G’s Fresh who have grown celery in the Isle of Ely in Cambridgeshire for over 50 years.
