Peru is the second largest exporter of avocados worldwide

According to Scotiabank, Peru is the second largest exporter of avocados worldwide, with 12% of total exports in 2013. The main exporter is Mexico, with 47% of the total shipments of avocados in the world.

Meanwhile, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Peru is among the 20 countries with the highest yield of avocado production in the world with 10.8 metric tons per hectare, beating its main competitors Mexico (10.1) and Chile (4.3). Samoa (29.8), Morocco (26.3) and the Dominican Republic (25.9) lead the classification, said Erika Manchego, senior analyst of the bank's Economic Research Department.

Exports of avocados between January and July 2014 amounted to $253 million dollars, 74% more than in the same period last year. This growth was due mainly to the increase in export volume (58%) resulting from the addition of new production areas of Hass avocado.

Meanwhile, the average export price has been improved so far in 2014, as it is up 10%, after remaining relatively stable.
