Honduras: Rambutan harvest to begin in a few weeks

The Honduran company, Frutas Exoticas, which is devoted to the export of rambutans, has two packing plants, one on the Atlantic coast and one in the centre of the country, three areas to grow rambutan and has GlobalGAP certification.

This fruit, considered as an ethnic product, is common among Asian communities. In 2010, when the company started operations, tests were performed in the American market and the company sold an average of 101,250 kilos, i.e. 45,000 boxes. By 2013, the sales increased to 340,000 kilos. The main markets are still the United States, Europe and Canada.

"The harvest of 2014 is coming later than usual," says Mr. Angeli, sales manager of the company: "This delay is an excellent opportunity for us to finish the year in the European and American markets, we expect the harvest will come to an end in early February 2015.

"We will be at the Fruit Logistica for the third time in 2015, thanks to the cooperation of the Netherlands' CBI and Honduras' FIDE, which, for the second time, chose us to accompany them to that event."

"We've bet a lot on Europe, but opening that market commercially hasn't been easy. The Europeans have many requirements such as certifications, among others, but it's clear that they want their fruit to have the highest quality and they want to ensure good agricultural practices."

"2013 was a year of many changes in our growing areas thanks to the GlobalGAP certification. Now we control everything and have the information available for all the customers who require it."

"We want to be known as a company that exports rambutan in excellent condition, but we also want to assure our buyers that we are committed to their market requirements and that we are a serious company," concluded Mr. Angeli.
