Tunisia: Now supplying chilli peppers to Europe

"Tunisian chilli pepper exports have increased in the past five years from the 80 tons of 2008 to the 880 tons in 2013 also thanks to importers like Libya, Algeria, France and the Arab gulf. Currently, not a lot of produce is exported to Italy, although demand is growing. All of this is due to the lack of produce in Europe and the good quality and competitive prices of the produce from Tunisia."

Agri Didon Tunisia company managers explained that "there are 30 cultivars of chilli peppers in our country, especially Starter and Baklouti, so we can supply produce to both the domestic and the foreign market."

Chilli peppers are produced in the hottest areas of the Mediterranean, and Tunisia in particular. In the past 5 years, the spice was cultivated on 19,000 hectares with an average production of around 280,000 tons. The main productive regions are Capo Bon, Kairouan and Sidi Bouzidin the north of the country.

Chilli peppers are cultivated in open fields or in greenhouses when out of season. This way, there is plenty of product for the local markets as well as for exports.

Part of the production is eaten fresh, another part is destined to the processing industry to be transformed in sauces like Harissa and the rest is dried and grounded.

Chilli peppers are packed in plastic or cardboard crates.
