Italy: Cauliflowers from the South now available

Prices are in line with last year, while traders are waiting for winter consumption to start and local productions to arrive.

"Currently there is both Italian and foreign produce on the market in Bologna. As regards domestic cauliflowers, the ones from the North are finishing and now those from Southern Italy are arriving. Foreign ones mostly comes from Holland and Germany. There is no sign of the Swedish produce though, which seemed to be doing well in the past years," explains Luigi Battisti from Loffredo Stella Srl.

"Currently prices fluctuate between €0.70 and €1 per 40x60 8 piece crates, it doesn't matter where the produce comes from. Prices are in line with last year, there is only a slight drop in volume."

The market will peak in winter: "Italian cauliflowers represent 40% of what's on the market but things will change starting from November. They go from being a niche product in the summer to a mass one in colder months."

"Prince de Bretagne cauliflowers will also arrive in winter. Something can already be found but most of the produce still has to arrive. Actually, whether it will be sold in Italy or not depends on the situation in Russia, which is a big cauliflower consumer."
