Ecuador heading for record banana export

Eduardo Ledesma, chairman of the association of the banana exporters of Ecuador (AEBE), has reported that banana growers and exporters are expecting an export increase of 5% compared to 2013 this year, expecting to export a quantity of 280 million boxes of bananas. The export has so far been almost equal to the first half of 2011, when the best result in history was achieved. "So far, we have exported 151 million boxes in 2014", Ledesma says. In 2013, the export amount in the first half of the year was 127 million boxes.

Ledesma says that the increase is caused by "measures taken by the government to improve the competitive edge of the exporters and growers".
