Ghana: Pineapple export to Europe decreasing further

The share of Ghanaian pineapple on the European market is decreasing further, German website Fruchthandel.de reports. According to information from the 'Sea-Freight Pineapple Exporters of Ghana' (SPEG) organization, the export volume from Ghana to Europe decreased from 71,000 tonnes in 2004 to around 40,000 tonnes in the past year.

Stephen Mintah, general manager of SPEG, for the most part attributes this to the fact that roughly ten years ago, the switch was made to the sweet MD2 pineapple variety, which currently dominates large parts of the global market. But the lack of domestic political support is also to blame for this development, according to him. Now though, help has been promised to the sector.
