Green bean harvest in Niedersachsen has begun

In the German state of Niedersachsen the green bean harvest has begun. Growers hope there will be a considerable harvest, reports the German website Proplanta.de.

According to a spokesman for agricultural trade from Niedersachsen, around 20 percent of German green beans are from this state. The green beans are grown on approximately 800 hectares of land and a large percentage of the harvest is directly supplied to fresh markets. The importance of organic farming is, by contrast, very limited. Only a handful of companies grow the vegetables organically.

Green beans are not resistant to frost and are therefore planted around the end of April until the middle of May. Special harvesting machines are used for the harvesting period in August and September. In the last year 10,000 tons of green beans have been harvested.
