Max Havelaar banana not fair after all?

Banana growers with the Fair Trade brand, known as Max Havelaar in the Netherlands, don't always supply 'fair' bananas. Growers are said to work with illegal employees for whom no social security is paid, writes De Telegraaf.Max Havelaar banana growers in the Dominican Republic are said to work with illegal Haïtian employees who work without a license or visa. The workers also see nothing of the premium paid by the consumer which is supposed to go to the employees.Fairtrade International confirms the reports. Harriet Lam: "Our first goal was to get growers to supply quality all year round. That's the only way to survive. At the same time there is no alternative in their own country for workers from the dirt poor Haïti. We have tried to prevent taking away their jobs with overly strict rules."Although the Dominican government wants to make agreements to ease the rules surrounding working visas, growers who spend those few hundred dollars on the pap work believe there is unfair competition.
