Ralph Bogers, CLTV Zundert:

"Strawberry prices better than expected"

At the moment, prices in the strawberry market are very good. "Things are even better than expected", Ralph Bogers of CLTV Zundert says. "On Monday, the week started out pretty good, and the past days the price went up very fast. These high prices are the result of a combination of factors," he explains. "An important aspect is supply: this is very low. In addition, demand is good."

Satisfied
"This leads to prices of 3 Euro and over for the large, extra quality open field strawberries, and 3.50 for protected cultivation. That's per 500 grammes, so 6 to 7 Euro per kilo. The median price for all varieties is over 5 Euro. For growers supplying now, this is very nice, although they would like to have harvested more kilos now." Ralph thinks it's hard to say whether prices will remain steady. "It all depends on the alignment of supply and demand. There are also alternatives on the market now, such as apples and pears. There is never any certainty."

Supply has decreased. "We are having an early season, so everything came earlier. At the end of May, we were already working in outdoor cultivation, nearly a month earlier. In June and July we had good weather, so those crops were also followed up rather quickly. Good weather just brings everything forward. Now it's a bit colder, and the strawberries don't ripen as fast, so there's another dip in supply. Yesterday we only had 42,500 kilos to auction off."

Volume increasing again
He expects that volumes will slightly increase again over the coming week. "The open field cultivation is drawing to a close, the tabletop cultivation volume will increase. In addition, more of the protected cultivation will be harvested as well, and then greenhouse cultivation will be here again. At the end of September, or even sooner, the volume is expected to have increased again."
