Discounter Netto selling fruit and vegetables with cosmetic flaws in August

German discounter Netto wants to put fruit and vegetables with small optical cosmetic flaws up for sale in all its German branches from, today, August 18 until 23, German website Fruchthandel.de reports. The products will come from German cultivation.

"The purpose of this sustainability initiative is to increase appreciation of food. At the same time, we are expanding our German range with this project, further supporting German agriculture", Christina Stylianou of Netto Marken-Discount explains.

Netto already started a pilot project with fruit and vegetables that deviated from the norm in the fall of 2013. In response to positive reactions from customers, the discounter expanded this sustainable retail project during promotional weeks in the past year.

In their own words, the discounter is emphasizing the regional product range. In the south of Germany, Netto customers will find deformed carrots in the fruit and veg department, and in the east, north and west of Germany, eating apples that slightly deviate from the norm, optically speaking. The crooked promotion products from German cultivation will be around 30% cheaper, compared to the usual range.
