Positive expectations for fresh Algerian fig season

A harvest of 112,000 quintals of fresh figs is expected this season in Tizi-Ouzou. According to Belabdellaziz Tarik, agronomist at the production and technical organisation (OPAT), these expectations concern a production acreage of 5,449 ha with average yield at 21qx/ha.

Fresh fig picking started this week and allowed a harvest of 250 quintals over a 10ha area, or an average 25qx/ha.

Expectations are positive this season compared to last year which was effected by the rain in May. This year May was dry and warm.
Fig farming in Tizi-Ouzou covers 6,102 ha, an acreage which could increase due to refound interest in such farming.

The first figs are already on the market and are sold between €2.34-€2.81 /kilo. The sellers say that the harvest was good this year, and prices will surely decrease as quantity increases on the market.
Fresh fig production last season was estimated at over 106.5qx with an average yield of 20qx/ha.
