Dr. Martha Lopez Villar, director of EsSalud, said that the cape gooseberry, a fruit native to Peru whose scientific name is Physalis peruviana, helps minimize cellular ageing, due to its large number of antioxidants, combats high blood pressure, stress, anxiety and stabilizes the level of glucose in the blood. "Hence, it is recommended that people with diabetes eat it," she said.
"The cape gooseberry is one of nature's wonders because it's a fruit that provides many health benefits, so it is advisable to consume it regularly," she said.
The specialist said that its antioxidant properties helped the body to deal with the negative effects of stress.
"It is a fruit that is rich in vitamins A and C, which strengthen the immune system, so its consumption also helps to prevent respiratory diseases," she stated.
In addition, Villar said, the fruit, which can be consumed as a juice or snack, contains high levels of protein (0.3%) and phosphorus (55%).
Finally, she said, the fruit's antibiotic and diuretic properties can help people manage their urinary problems and, thanks to the fruit's contents of chemicals known as flavonoids, it can be used as a natural tranquillizer.
This fruit is also very hygienic, as it is wrapped in a shell that, once it's mature, has the consistency of paper.
