Russia complains about Ukrainian potatoes again

Grave concern of the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service is provoked by detection of Golden Eelworm (Globodera rostochiensis) in Ukrainian potatoes, - Press Service reports.

The Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service in Russia have repeatedly expressed their concerns caused by violations of international and Russian requirements to quarantine products exported from Ukraine. Official investigation has been demanded and encouraged that Ukraine has taken steps to put in place necessary phytosanitary measures, - the officials announce.

An illustrative example provided by the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service in Russia:

7 kilos of potatoes were found in hand luggage of a Ukrainian citizen entering Russia last week. The potatoes were withdrawn and tested. As shown by results of evaluation, the potatoes are contaminated with Golden Eelworm. 7 kg of potatoes are sent back to Ukraine, an administrative case on the violation is open.

However, this is not the first case of quarantine pests detection in Ukrainian products. It was not long ago, when another Ukrainian citizen tried to import into Russian Federation 16 kg of poppy seeds without a Phytosanitary Certificate. A pest – Dodder (Cuscuta aroensis) – was found in these seeds. An administrative case was open, poppy seeds were sent back to Ukraine.
