Organic food offered in over half of French canteens
Almost 6 out of 10 canteens offer organically farmed produce, double that of 2009. With 80% of school canteens offering organic produce, the demand is generally from 68% of parents and 53% of employees who want to see organic food in schools and workplaces. The development of organic in canteens is above all thanks to the public sector that has seen 70% of establishments offer organic food this year compared to 44% in the private sector.
But the share of organic produce is still marginal. 60% of establishments only offer organic produce once a month (compared to 36% in 2009), whilst only 16% serve it daily (5% in 2009). Although organic produce is more common on the menu, it is rare that the whole menu is concerned. Only 28% establishments offer complete organic menus (a decrease compared to 35% in 2013). 51% only offer some organic products or ingredients and 21% a completely organic course.
This concerns fresh produce above all, mainly fruits, vegetables and dairy products which are in less than three quarters of canteens. In the canteens that offer organic produce, it represents 12% of the total amount of their purchases compared to 5% in 2008 on average.
