US: Citrus imports include larger sizes from Peru

Opportune rains this year have made for large-sized tangerines imported into the United States from Peru. The volume of fruit coming in this year also looks to be more than in previous years, as more groves contain fruit-bearing trees.

“We're seeing much larger sizes for Murcotts than we've seen in the past,” said Jim Cutsinger of International Citrus and Produce. ICP imports their tangerines from Peru, and the sizes they've seen from there have been large because of favourable weather this year, explained Cutsinger.

“The rains down in Peru have been perfect for the season,” he said. “In the past, the growers there haven't gotten rain during the time they needed it for larger sizing, but the rains hit at the right time this year. We're also working with a new packing shed this year, so the quality is much better.” Volumes have increased this year, as growers continue to plant new groves.

“We started this Peru deal eight years ago, and from then until now growers have added a lot of groves that have now come online,” said Cutsinger. “So Peru has been shipping more citrus than in previous years because they're just planting a lot more.”
