Great demand for ‘Ready-to-drink’ coconut
Yex’ coconuts come from professional farms in Thailand and Vietnam. The coconut is a hand-picked specimen from Thailand. The coconut is harvested as young fruit, as it contains lots of coconut water. "These are ready for immediate use. You just need to drill a hole or cut off the hood and then you can drink the fluid through the straw," says Edwin van Leeuwen of Yex. An average coconut contains about 300 ml of water. According to Edwin, (speaking in mid-June) the market for coconuts is excellent. "With the bright and warm spring, we have much demand for this particular product."
The European continent is the main market for Yex coconuts. The product is still a relatively new product, which according to Edwin leads to demand from the upper segment. "It is now up to us to make the consumer aware of the coconut. The liquid of a coconut is often used as an additive for other recipes, but by consuming directly from the coconut you do get the best possible experience.” In spite of early customer enthusiasm, Edwin doesn’t expect the product becoming a household name. However, the coconuts are available in grocery stores and restaurants, and are marketed under its own brand Discovered.
