Carrefour abandons the Indian market

Carrefour's Indian adventure has been brief at the most. Installed in the country since 2010, the group has announced that they will close their 5 large wholesale stores and leave the Indian market.

The group have not officially explained their reasons. According to the BBC, British group Tesco are the only group to currently have store opening projects planned in India. But these openings could be held back by the Bharatiya Janta party who are strongly opposed to foreign stores in the country, fearing that they have economic consequences on small businesses.

This could help to explain the group's retreat from the Indian market, but it should also be signalled that they recently withdrew from non-performing markets such as Greece, Singapore and Malaysia.
