Peter Damen. KCB quality specialist:

Quality of greenhouse vegetables mediocre

When visiting at the beginning of week 27 I saw fresh products, but also some from before the weekend. This meant that they were a few days old. I found internal rot in the first party of yellow peppers. This phenomena is hard to see right after the harvest, but is obvious a few days later. This year is the first time I've seen internal rot. Looking out for this is good. The orange peppers were good and the red and green were mediocre. The quality was like that of the end of the season.

Not all tomato parties were great either. There were some dull parties in the wine tomatoes and the loose tomatoes were also mediocre, as many had just turned orange and a lot of crowns were lacking. There were a few rotten fruits in a party, not a sign of reliable quality. Small tomatoes in long vines won. Impeccable, but so were a few parties of rough vine tomatoes.

Aubergines were same as usual. Beautiful shining fruits, sufficiently firm and of good shape. I wrote this in almost every column, the fruit deserves it. Headed lettuce of good quality were ready to send to the dock: uncooled! Enormous pre-cooling installations were built for this over 40 years ago! Obviously they are no longer used. Cucumbers were of mediocre to reasonable quality. I didn't see any particularly outstanding parties, but no doubt there are parties of stem fruits or the first rank fruits which would present themselves better. A few parties of open ground vegetables such as Lollo Rossa  and Chinese cabbage were of excellent quality. It was a shame they weren't Dutch, as we can do that too.
