Mexico: Vegetable production drops by up to 70 percent

Jose Manuel Horak Santoyo, president of the Agricultural Union of South Tamaulipas, stated that vegetable production had fallen considerably as 50 producers had abandoned the activity because of security issues, which had lead to a decrease in the cultivated area, from 12,000 hectares to only 3,500 hectares.

Horak Santoyo added that, if safety improved by the end of the year, producers would probably start returning and reinvesting in the area.

The production of vegetables is one of the great engines of agricultural activity in Gonzalez, Mante, Aldama and Altamira.

Since 2009, nearly 50 producers, only in the industrial area, stopped investing in the production of fruits and vegetables intended for domestic consumption and, to some extent, for exports.
