According to the manager, quotations were affected by bad weather in Italy, which did not favour consumption. "Usually, Dutch tomatoes are very popular in Northern Italy and they are sold at higher prices than the Italian produce. This year, though, their prices dropped over just a few days.
"When summer isn't as hot, melon/watermelon, tomato and peach/nectarine consumption drops."
In the past 3 months, prices have dropped so much that they don't even cover production costs, "especially if you think about the hydroponics technology used in Holland. Now quotations are fluctuating, as they vary according to how the weather affects demand. We will try to extend our sales until December to try and make up for this situation."
Stefano Pezzo also adds that he is quite satisfied with the quality. "The produce imported is very good, with excellent grades, colour and taste, so they are perfect for retailers. We are waiting for the heat wave to arrive, so that consumption can increase and then so will imports."
