“Importing is extremely attractivein the German market. This leads to more potatoes being imported from Egypt andIsrael, and also from neighboring countries”, says Monika Tietke, secretary of the ‘BioKartoffel Erzeuger Verein’. The price of the potatoes is regulating their placementon the market. The German potatoes are therefore having a difficult time. Thecosts of growing and storing the organic potatoes are much higher than withother growing cultures. The potato is much more demanding and susceptible todisease.
“We cannot do muchbesides asking the customers to look at the packaging when purchasing potatoes, because that is where you can see where the potatoes were grown. For me thishas nothing to do with patriotism because every organic potato that is grownhere actively contributes to the protection of the environment," explains Tietke.
