Nkoana-Mashabane represents South Africa at AU Food Summit

South Africa supports agriculture and food security initiatives in the continent aimed at ending hunger and food shortages.

This follows International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane's participation at the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on Sunday where she would represent the country at the 25th Ordinary Session of the executive council.

According to spokesman for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Clayson Monyela, the Executive Council Meeting, which is a Ministerial level was taking place ahead of the AU Summit, scheduled for 25-27 June.

The theme of the Summit is "Year of Agriculture and Food Security: Transforming Africa's agriculture for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods through harnessing opportunities for inclusive growth and sustainable development."

Monyela said the theme coincides with the 10th year celebration of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

"South Africa reaffirms its commitment to the development of the agricultural sector and celebrates 2014 as the Year of Agriculture and Food Security in Africa, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the CAADP," said.

He said the Executive Council would also consider, amongst others, the adoption of the Agenda 2063 framework; peace and security issues on the Continent; Africa's common position on the post-2015 development agenda; as well as NEPAD-related issue.
