Russia: Apple, banana imports down 7 %

During the first four months of 2014, Russia imported 7 % less fruit and vegetables than in the same period last year, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. The value of such imports also dropped by 7 %.

According to Fruit & Vegetable Facts, based on information from the Customs Authorities, Russia imported 2.95 million tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables (3.16 million tonnes in 2013) between January and April.

Meanwhile, the value of imports dropped to 2.8 billion U.S. dollars (2.06 billion Euro). The import decline can be largely attributed to the significantly smaller apple and banana import volumes. While apple shipments in the first four months of the year decreased by 24 %, to 478,000 tonnes, banana imports dropped by 11 % to 452,000 tonnes. Also oranges (-16 %) and grapes (-18 %) experienced significant reductions in import volumes compared to last year.
