Pomelo cultivation gives Chinese producers hope

About 95 % of the inhabitants of a village in eastern China are fully focused on the cultivation of pomelo, with over 8,000 hectares devoted to the processing industry, all run by family businesses. Compared to the previous year, harvest volumes have increased. This year, more than 9,000 tonnes have been harvested for a price per kilo of € 0.71 to € 1.18.

The village has created a fruit cooperative for the development of a standardised production, which requires technical regulations. Production technologies are managed collectively, as well as agricultural inputs, plant protection products and brand marketing. This is a win-win situation for both producers and other stakeholders, as there is an effective protection of the country and the fruit's quality. The cooperative offers many benefits to the growers.
