The first shipments of PGI Tropea red onions from O.P. Monte Soc. Coop. are ready to be shipped to the US. Supplies will last until the end of August.
"We are expecting to make at least 7 shipments. There is no particular protocol to comply with as, being PGI, the produce must already comply with regulations. The objectives is to offer new opportunities to the produce, because it deserves to be promoted," says Francesco Sorace, director of the PO.
"We planned production together with our associate producers. We wanted to bring to American tables the sweetness and unmistakeable taste of Tropea onions, but we also wanted to make the many Italo-Americans re-discover the flavours of their land."
"After a few doubts due to the weather, we started harvesting and selecting the produce according to PGI regulations."
The first containers should transit from Gioia Tauro and the transit time should be of 20 days. They will arrive in New Jersey and then the produce will be sold in major supermarkets.
"We are confident that PGI tropea red onions will be successful even overseas," concludes Sorace.
