Argentina: Onion export season progresses slowly

The Onion Certification for Export Program, being conducted by FUNBAPA, informed that a total of 59,278 tons of onions had been exported during the first quarter of 2014, a value well below the 90,000 tons average for that period of time.

Exports of onion from the Patagonian Protected Region began on January 11, as in the previous campaign, but with a slower pace that hasn't changed.

Thus, until April 30, 59,278 tons were certified, 55,296 tons of which were destined for Brazil, 3,190 to Paraguay, 714 to the European Union and 78 to the U.S.

Meanwhile, 107,572 tons were destined for the domestic market, mainly for the provinces of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe; 12,471 tons less than in the same period last year.

According to reports from the program's coordination, considering the evolution of exports to date and the time of year, it can be assumed that this campaign will record one of the lowest export volumes since the beginning of the Certificate of Origin in 1999.
