India: Man forced to eat 96 bananas

The banana is popular. Each year, more than 95 million tons of the fruit is produced.
A banana a day is certainly good for the stomach, two bananas will likely have the same effect. But 96 bananas? It seems you can expect certain repercussions on the digestive system.

Passengers on an Indian train witnessed the theft of a gold necklace. The police were alerted. When the thief became aware that he could not escape his arrest, he ate the gold chain. But that did not outwit the police: an x-ray of the chain outlined the evidence in the suspect’s stomach.

Punishment

Instead of waiting for the digestive system to run its natural course, police (with the permission of the court) forced the thief to speed up matters by eating no less than 96 bananas. The next day, the gold ornament was retrieved.

Indian officials declined to comment on the question of the suspect’s health as a result of the meal. Eating such a large quantity of bananas may, however, be fatal. Side effects can cause headaches, nerve damage and hyperkalemia, a condition that can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac arrest.
