EU suspects mushroom conserve producer of forming a cartel

European consumers may have been paying too much for mushroom conserves for years, reports the German website Proplanta.de. Last Tuesday, the European Commission confirmed that they have started an inquest against multiple producers, as they are suspected of forming a cartel.

The results of the ongoing investigation are as of yet unknown. The French Bonduelle Group is among those being investigated. The suspicion of forming a cartel concerns mushrooms conserves that were not sold under their brand name, but under the trader's own brand.

When asked, Bonduelle explained that the European Commission is investigating the period between 2006 and 2012. The company itself has only been producing mushroom conserves since a company takeover in April 2010. The inquest has been running since April 2013.

Illicit collaboration to disadvantage competitors and consumers is not allowed in the EU. Companies found guilty of this could face fines of up to ten percent of their global annual turnover.
