Onion sector booming in Senegal

According to the Minister of Trade, Alioune Sarr, in 10 years Senegalese onion production has sprung from 40,000 tons to 260,000. Production reaches 15,000 to 18,000 tons/month, i.e. over 200,000 tons annually. This places Senegal amongst the world's main onion producing countries.

The onion sector is present in over 14% of rural households. The Minister says that this ''growth justifies the State setting up important facilities for commercialising local production in different horticultural zones, particularly the Niayes''.

The Minister was present at the inauguration of a stocking and drying space, Darou Khoudoss, which Mme Dellicour, Head of the European Delegation in Senegal, says is ''amongst the 5 infrastructures that the EU wanted to finance within its 10th development fund (Fed) for a total of 450 million CFA's.''
