Italy: New Sicilian Charentais melons now on the market

"After a few years of tests, we are now harvesting a new type of Charentais melon which is tender, with a deep colour and smaller placental cavity. In addition, fruits are compact, with good productivity and shelf-life," explains Ettore Cagna (in the photo below), chairman of Agricola Don Camillo.

The variety, together with other Sicilian specialities, will be produced until late May on around 150 hectares. Sales manager Walter Benelli and the quality managers of the company are already in Sicily.

The produce is destined to the domestic market as well as to Switzerland, Austria and Germany even though, in these countries, it has to compete with produce from North Africa (Morocco and Senegal) and Costa Rica.

"Harvesting is early this year, Central Italy should start around 10th May and Veneto around the 15th."

This year, despite the drop in consumption, the company increased its investments. "We did so because we believe in high-quality and professionalism -thanks to the quality of our melons, this year our sales actually increased. We believe in high-quality also as a means to retain our customers."

Walter Benelli tackles "quick deliveries".

On 23rd April, Ettore Cagna will visit the Mipaaf (Italian Ministry for Agriculture) to launch the Melon Committee, which he promoted together with Nazario Battelli. They hope to improve the management and planning of Italian productions in order to be more competitive against Spain and France.
