In 2013, Spain and Brazil were the European Union's main melon suppliers. The EU purchased a total of 921,230 tonnes of the fruit, of which 40.09% was sold by Spain, 18.19% by Brazil and 10.85% by the Netherlands (re-exporting country, which last year purchased nearly twice the volume of melons it managed to sell), according to data from the Euroestacom service (Eurostat-Icex).

Spain exported a total of 369,300 tonnes, 40.09% of the total, at an average price of 0.76 Euro per kilo, which amounted to 279,66 million Euro in revenue.

The second place was for Brazil, which sold 167,590 tonnes (18.19%) to all EU countries for 123.08 million Euro (an average of 0.73 Euro per kilo).

The Netherlands, in third position, sold their EU partners 99,920 tonnes at an average of 1.02 Euro per kilo, reaching 101.55 million Euro in revenue.
