Webshops on the rise for buying food

Consumers are increasingly making use of webshops, even for buying food. This is where they hope to find inspiration for cooking or information about certain products. Supermarkets are astutely responding to this trend by presenting ingredients, recipes and background material in simple and appealing online formats.

There's an increase in the popularity of pick-up locations. The consumer’s way of shopping has changed, moving from the shop floor to a pick-up location. Groceries are ordered online, the supermarket assembles the order and the consumer collects the purchases whenever this is convenient for him or her.

People are not only ordering their everyday groceries online – increasingly, they are also turning to the web in search of special or specific ingredients. Vegetables, for example, are easily ordered directly from the farmer and supplied in an especially assembled food box, or ordered directly from the product’s country of origin. Technology is making a fundamental change in how customers shop for groceries. This means that it is important for the sector to retain it's significant role by providing retailers with the information they need.
