"The potatoes look really good so we are happily sizing them just now. The Alpha's came from an early crop which were also specially prepared for early delivery," explained Mark Verweij.
'Junior' Steven van Kralingen received potatoes from 'old hand' Mark Verweij together with controller Andre Bakker
Mark Mizzi, is a contact for Verdi Import who is responsible for the year round supervision, sourcing and export from the sunny island. "The good weather has had a positive effect on demand for new potatoes and I am positive about the season ahead. As well as the Maltese potatoes we also sell plenty of other varieties, such as Santé and Derby and serious amounts of Maroc Nicola, washed in the recognisable Hessian sacks in sizes small, medium, large and extra large. These are sold mainly to Eastern Europe. Unfortunately the Belarus/Russian border is closed which is a task for FrugiVenta/NAO," said the trader.
We grow Doré's in an old olive grove in Southern Spain and expect them around Easter. The familiar old Galantina potatoes will also be available but supply will depend on the weather in Southern Italy. In recent years there has been a big change in the market for new potatoes which can be quickly pan cooked and the yellow tasty Galatina potato with bacon and rosemary remains the tastiest," concluded Mark Verweij.
