Peru: Pomegranate export volumes up 20% this year

According to the president of Progranada, Rodolfo Pacheco Monteverde, Peru could export 7,137,280 kilos of pomegranates this year, which would represent a 20% increase compared to 2013, when 5,947,725 kilos were shipped.

The main destinations for the fruit will be the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, China, Mexico and Thailand, and some shipments will also be made to the Middle East.

Pacheco stated that the country has 1,500 hectares of pomegranate plantations, located in Lima, Ica, La Libertad and Ancash, from which 12,000 tonnes of fruit are produced. 90% of the production corresponds to the 14 companies that form Progranada.

Peru exports pomegranates of the Acco, 116 and Wonderful varieties.
