After a good market for mushrooms in January and February the market slumped a little last week. "There are more than enough regular mushrooms on the market at the moment, and the same goes for organics. This is resulting in a declining price. The price per kilo for white mushrooms is at around 1.25-1.30 Euro and we're moving away from 1.40 Euro. This is a big difference in level," says Noud Spetgens of Bio Europe.

"The chestnut mushrooms were very expensive in January and February, but have slumped a little now too. I don't really work with chanterelles myself, but I've heard from the market that there are more than enough of them as well," says Noud. He expects the current market situation to last another two weeks or so, and a traditional revival to occur before Easter. "The big demand will come after Easter. That period is always a bit more problematic for sales."
"The shelf life of mushrooms wasn't great over the last few weeks. Now I can see that the cultivation is being done more easily and I expect the problems to be solved soon, but over the last few weeks we had to sell very fast," says the mushroom trader.
Bio Europe is part of the Fresh Food Group and has its own nursery (8.5 tonnes per week) for chestnut mushrooms and white mushrooms in Liessel, including their own packaging line. The company also imports mushrooms from Portugal. The main markets for the organic mushrooms are Germany, Scandinavia and a small portion even finds its way to the French market.
