Guy de Meyer, Demargro:

"EU: "Leek prices low all season"

Things are still really bad in the leek market. There has been talk of low prices all season, whereas some batches only made 8 cents. Explains Guy de Meyer of Demargro. "It is still at a low price. Producers are starting to make less product available because the prices are low anyway. Therefore things are a little more expensive than last week but it is still not a lot."

Low price
Recently there have been batches that sold for around 8 cents. "Today the price was 11 cents but 10 cents has been the minimum price lately. No matter if the price is 8 or 10 cents it is still a low price. There is not a leek grower who can be satisfied looking back on this year. There has been no revival in any way. We had very mild weather in comparison to the other years. A lot of leeks had been planted and now there is still quite a lot in the fields".

According to Guy some of the volume will be used for export. "Every country has its own production, so if there is a shortage of product, they'll import it. These are generally small volumes. There is not a demanding party that stands out. I am not expecting much of this season. I am not saying that we will keep lingering around 10 cents but i don't think there will be an enormous increase on the price any more. It is not likely to be 50 cents all of a sudden. Frost is not expected and it will be 18 to 19 degrees this week. Young leek has been planted back on the fields and there will be new spring leek as of May if the weather stays like this. It was still cold in our neighbouring countries or Scandinavia in the previous year, but even they are already planting young leeks".
