Gert-Jan Slobbe, Fortuna Frutos:

"We expect more Canary tomatoes"

Fortuna Frutos is ending the Canary cucumber season this week, but will continue with the Canary Island tomatoes over the next few months. "Whereas the supply of imported tomatoes from Morocco and Spain is decreasing, we are always strong with Canary tomatoes in the months March to May," says Gert-Jan Slobbe. "This is why we are going to receive larger volumes over the next eight to ten weeks."

After a tough start to the Canary tomato season in November, during which there was an oversupply on the market, resulting in an extremely low price level, the importer says the market has recovered. "This week the demand was a little less than the last few weeks, but February and March have been reasonably good months. The first Dutch tomatoes are arriving on the market, but they are limited amounts and so we are not in each other's way."

Gert-Jan is looking forward to the rest of the season positively. "The Canary tomatoes are of good quality and are sought after on the market. We have made good programmes with our loyal customers in the food service at home and abroad for the next few weeks." He says the cucumber season went reasonably well. "The production was a little higher because more was harvested from the same area."
