French producers against new Mc Donalds

A goat can be seen grazing on the spot of the future Mc Donalds in Segré. Local production ''eating'' a multinational.

10 or so producers (and a goat) assembled before the future Mc Donalds site with an ''aim to alert public opinion'' explains producer Daniel Cottineau. Their aim is not to stop people going to fast-food chains or halt construction, but to ''defend and support local producers and short supply chains. The opposite of Mc Donalds.''

To do so, vegetable growers, breeders and farmers went onto the Segré carpark for people to taste ''quality products, available to them right next door''.

''Desertification'' of the town-centre, ''accentuated by the arrival of a multinational will be the death of Segréen shop keepers,'' says Joseph Bouvet, retired farmer.
