EU-5: below average potato harvest confirmed

The Association of North Western European Potato Growers (NEPG), recently gave an update to the December estimates of cultivation and harvest of potatoes in Great Britain, Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Germany.

Harvest volumes rose slightly to 23,888 million tons, report German Agricultural Market Information Bureau (AMI) on their website. Although the harvest was 4.3% higher than the previous year, the five year average was 2.5% lower.

Comparing to previous years, Germany's harvest was the smallest, but also Great Britain and The Netherlands yielded harvests lower than previous years. In Belgium the harvest was slightly more than the five year average, but they couldn't keep up with the required processing volumes. However, expanding the harvest into neighbouring regions of Northern France would help, since the French manufacturing industry do not make use of this themselves.
