"Kees Schouten: "Rain is slowing harvest at the moment"

First pallets of Santé from Malta unloaded at potato wholesaler Altena

The first pallets of real spring harvest at Malta potatoes arrived at potato wholesaler Altena in Wijk en Aalburg this morning. "We have now received the first pallets of Santé and the variety Derby is also set to arrive. I expect the same shipment next week. After fourteen days the harvest should be a little bigger. We will still have to wait about four weeks for the Alpas," says Kees Schouten.

Altena imports the Maltas in collaboration with Raphael Scerry. According to Kees, who visited the Maltese cultivation areas last weekend, the Santé potatoes look fantastic, but the harvest has been slowed by the rain. "But as soon as the sun comes out, they will be able to harvest at full strength in a few days. We will have to see how the consumer will respond to the premier potatoes, but the good weather is always beneficial to consumption."

The Santé potatoes are for sale at Jac van den Oord and Aartsenfruit.
