South Africa: Popularity of kumquats increasing

Premier Fruits is an export agent for 3 South African growers of kumquats, collectively they produce 180,000 cartons of the exotic fruit on around 30 hectares in the North East of the country.

The main destinations are Europe and the UK. Stephen Beghin from Premier Fruit explains that the South African kumquat export season fits in perfectly with the Spanish and Israeli seasons.

"Our fruit is available from May to October on the European markets, which fills the gap from the other countries, this is a niche product which does face a bit of competition from European summer fruits such as berries and stonefruit, but it is growing in popularity in the supermarkets and is also popular for processing into jams and preserves."

Bighin said the growing season this year has been good with plenty of rain and the quality of the fruit was looking good.

The Kumquats are marketed under the supplier's brands as well as the Premier one and are also supplied for customer's own labels.

When the season for Kumquats is over Premier Fruit will start with the export of Lychees.
