Arie van Baalen, River Onions:

"Onion grower very confident that there is more to be gained"

The upturn in the onion market, according to Arie van Baalen from River Onions in Brakel, is due to a combination of factors. "The farmer is very confident that there is more to be gained and has, up until now, been correct. Russia did a few big orders but then the price increased. Traders have limited stocks and what was brought in today was only bought a few days ago.

"There are also sorters who in recent weeks have had little to pack simply because there were not enough onions but his colleague was busier so then you get the wrong picture," explained Arie. "Russia is pulling the kart and a few other destinations but not to any extreme. How the market will develop is difficult to predict. The farmer is very convinced that he is right and that there will be tension in the coming weeks between farmers and trade. Exporters have the nice job of explaining the price increase."
