Mexico: Michoacán has the fourth highest melon production

According to Ramón Cano Vega, from Sedru, Michoacán is the fourth state of the republic with the highest melon production, as it produces about 101,700 tons per year. The state ranks ninth in terms of exports of this fruit, since 80 percent of its production is shipped to the United States and Japan.

200 hectares of melons are grown each season in La Huacana, each of which produces about 40 tons of fruit and employs more than 2,000 people, generating an economic impact of about 45 million pesos.

The municipalities with the highest melon production in the state are Huetamo, with 12,000 hectares, San Lucas with 3,000, and Tiquicheo with nearly 500 hectares.

According to the official, the municipalities of Gabriel Zamora and Miigica are interested in increasing their melon production, so they can enter more markets.
