"Expectations for 'Green' are promising this season"

Europe: Zespri sees a significant decrease in 'Gold' volumes

The New Zealand Zespri kiwi season started a little later than usual this year. "We grow a natural product, which means that weather conditions have a large impact," explains Nele Moorthamers from Zespri. "The rainfall was less than average in the crucial growing regions. The dry period did had a positive effect because it meant that it was not as easy for the Psa disease to spread. On top of that, it also had a positive impact on the flavour. On the other hand, it is important to have rain in the weeks before the harvest in order for the fruit to grow to an average size. The rain waited until April to fall. These conditions have meant a slower start for the harvest which is now at full speed. The average kiwi size will be a bit smaller than last year."

Disappointing harvest for Gold
“Growth in the last few year was focused on the Gold varieties. The spread of Psa really threw a spanner in the works because Zespri Gold is really susceptible to Psa. This disease has affected our production in all areas. There is not much we can do, but we know how to deal with it. The requirements are high when it comes to hygiene. A lot has been invested in research to prevent and combat Psa. There are various projects with various methods and the best method is yet to be proven. This is due to the fact that production areas are affected worldwide and the effect to orchards is different everywhere."

Increase in SunGold from 2014
"Despite the disappointing gold harvest, we are positive about the future growth of SunGold and the new gold variety that is more tolerant to Psa. Around 2,700 were planted last summer and Zespri expects a dramatic increase starting in 2014. The growers in New Zealand are also enthusiastic about the new variety. The fruit is easier to grow, with an attractive production per hectare."

Promising
"The coming season for gold kiwi's will be shorter this year due to a significant decrease in Zespri Gold volumes. This is partially because of Psa, but mainly because of the transition between the different gold varieties. All markets will be served to the best of our abilities, but demand will exceed supply. Green volumes are equal to those of last year. Around 70 million boxes will be exported worldwide. Expectations are positive for this season. "The quality and flavour of green kiwis is promising, so the total supply of our kiwi's will remain interesting to our partners." Nele concludes.
