Colombia: Producers and exporters of Hass avocados make up a national committee

The ICA, agro entrepreneurs and in particular producers of Hass avocados are taking action so that their product is admissible in the United States.

In compliance with the requirement of the Health authority of the United States (APHIS), Colombian producers and exporters of Hass avocado formed a National Committee (CORPOHASS of Colombia), which will represent the interests of the sector in the national and international markets.

"CORPOHASS’ objective is that the sector have only one national representation to dialogue in the future process for exporting Hass avocados to the United States," said Theresa Beltran Ospina, ICA’S CEO, adding that the Institute, through the Deputy Manager and Plant Health Regulation, has been leading and accompanying this process since 2011 as well as conducting a detailed field survey on the production and health information to consolidate the work plan with health authorities of that country.

60 producers and exporters of Hass avocado from Cundinamarca, Risaralda, Quindio, Caldas, Tolima, Valle and Antioquia accompanied by the ICA, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and representatives from the US recently met in the city of Pereira to form the Committee.

Board Members of CORPOHASS COLOMBIA are:
Diego Aristizabal (Quindio), Juan Camilo Ruiz (Antioquia), Diego Duque (Valle), Rodrigo Garavito (Tolima), Jean Pierre Coulet (Caldas), Fernando Bernal, Christian Gartner (Cundinamarca), Pedro Pablo Diaz (Antioquia), Faustina Rodallega (Cauca), Hector Fabio Moncada (Risaralda) and Andrea Idarraga (Quindío).

Interesting facts:

The country has about 8,800 acres of avocado in production, in 65 municipalities of 9 departments.
