Slow start for UK soft fruit season
John Gray from Angus Soft Fruits who grow most of their fruit in Scotland, said that a couple of good warm sunny weeks in April will put them back on track, but as ever the weather is unpredictable.
Angus Soft Fruits supplies soft fruit year round and have over the winter months had fruit from Morocco, Spain and Egypt, but even in these countries the weather has been unpredictable making the import season a challenge.
The prolonged cold weather is also affecting demand in the UK, people tend to buy soft fruit when it gets warmer. Gray is hoping for a brighter few weeks, their first strawberries on the market will be Angus Soft Fruits' own Islay and the new AVA Rosa variety which will be launched in mid-May after successful commercial trials last year.
